It was my ninth grade year at Robert E. Lee Jr. High in San Angelo, Texas. My student council job was to broadcast the morning announcements. It was the first step in my dream of becoming an on-air personality. My team and I added a little spice to the traditionally droll morning litany of announcements.

For awhile things went fine. Then one day Amy Cassles had an idea. Instead of just reading off the list of birthdays, Amy wanted to sing the birthday song. It was my show and I gave her the go-ahead. We imagined our imaginary ratings soaring. But then, halfway through the song, Amy busted out laughing uncontrollably.

At the end of our program there was dead silence. Until our principal, Mr. Snodgrass, asked to see us. A look of terror struck the eyes of my team. I know because their eyes were staring right at me. In a moment of extreme bravery on my part, I led the way into Mr. Snodgrass’ office. Mr. Snodgrass was a retired military commander and we felt like we were going before the judge in a court martial.

Judges elicit a sense of fear, don’t they? They never call you in for something you have done right. We think of them as someone who harshly tells us what we did wrong. And they seem to be everywhere these days on television. There’s Judge Judy and Hatchett. Mathis and Christina. And my favorite—Judge Brown.

Then there are some judges you may not know. They even have a book in the Bible with their name on it. Judges. These judges appeared on the scene to help sort out right and wrong. They also helped people get out of trouble.

God’s people kept putting themselves into a never ending cycle of disobedience, discipline, declaration of wrong, and deliverance. Judges like Deborah and Gideon and Samson helped them find their way back to God.

What did the people do that was so bad they needed judges? Two things. First, they failed to put God first in their lives (Judges 1:28). And secondly, they did not teach their children to know God (Judges 2:10). These two “sins” led to their downfall and ruin.

Are you making the same mistakes they made? If so, you have a judge that can help you––Jesus.

The good news is that when he “calls” you into his office after you’ve messed up, you will look up to see your judge’s face and see your savior there.

When someone keeps telling you to “be strong and courageous,” you might suspect you are up against something big. And the Israelites were.

About to enter the land that had been promised them 600 years before, they had a giant-sized task awaiting them. Literally. Forty years earlier ten spies had come back and told the Israelites that the inhabitants of the land were so big they felt like they were the size of a grasshopper in comparison. Fear took them captive without a battle and sent them off as a group to wander around in a wilderness where they took their chances against wild animals rather than face their giants.

They wandered so long that those who had grasshopper-sized faith died out. Forty years later their children were ready to take the land. They were physically no taller than their parents had been. The enemies in the land were no smaller than before. But the Israelites’ faith muscles had grown.

There were two spies who had reported the land was theirs for the taking. One of them, Joshua, is now the Israelites’ leader. He was courageous. And God wanted to keep him that way. So God tells him three times in the first nine verses of the first chapter of Joshua: “Be strong and courageous.” He also reminds him “the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”

My guess is you have a few giants in your life too. Some uphill battles that appear insurmountable. A task demanding more than you think you have to give. One too many things on your “to do” list than you have the time or energy to do. Unemployment is staring you down. Depression has a grip on you. Bills have raided your bank account and left it empty. An illness hovers in your life like a threatening storm. You’d rather just run and wander.

Instead, be strong and courageous. You have a Joshua that will lead the way. The New Testament equivalent of the name “Joshua” is “Jesus.” And he has promised to be with you always (Matthew 28:20).

Jesus knows how to lead you through battles. He had a few of his own while he was on this earth. Enemies attacking him with accusations (Mark 3:22). No home and no bed (Luke 9:58). Crowds and expectations pressing in on him (Luke 8:45). The religious establishment eventually insuring he was sentenced to a brutal death. (Mark 15:14).

Yet he took on the most barbaric giant there is, death, and lived to tell about it. He can help you do the same. You need only be strong and courageous in your faith.

Every parent has been there. The trip ahead is long. The travel schedule is tight. You hit the road with a full tank, confident the plan you have crafted beats anything AAA could muster. But twenty minutes down the highway you hear a small, squeaky voice from the backseat. The artillery begins to bombard you. The questions.

Some you expected. Are we there yet? How much longer? Can we get something to eat?

The next barrage is unexpected. Who was the first person to decide to squeeze those things on a cow and drink whatever came out? Why does our dog get mad at us when we blow in his face but when we take him on a car ride he sticks his head out the window?

Every parent has been there. Questions from the backseat. You come to expect them. Every journey to a destination includes them. The same is true for the journey of faith.

Just like kids on a trip we get tired of the journey. We want to know when we can stop. We get tired of serving. We get tired of waiting. We get tired of the people we’re traveling with.

And we grumble. The Israelites did. They complained about the food, about the place they were traveling about their ‘driver’ Moses and they turned away from God. They blamed Him. They were better off as slaves!

Grumbling does not set well with God. In fact, our grumbling can lead to our wandering. When offered the chance to leave Kadesh and enter the Promised Land, the Israelites listened to the fear-filled report from ten spies instead of the faith-full report of Joshua and Caleb.

Kadesh means “Spring of Decision” and it was time for one. They were in the right place to make the right decision. But the majority made the wrong one. The people wished they had died in the desert. So God told them they would get their wish. They would wander until the unbelieving generation died out.

And they did. They wandered in the Wilderness for forty years. And their children were impacted by their decisions.

The decisions you make affect those around you, just like the decisions the Israelites made at Kadesh. You can decide to grumble or be thankful. You can decide to turn away from God or turn toward God. You can decide to wander without purpose through life or follow God’s vision for your life.

Just don’t forget that those in the backseat will be affected by your decisions.

It was perhaps the greatest opportunity ever. God tells Moses that he wants to come to his people and dwell right in the middle of their camp. Not on the outskirts. Not in the ‘burbs. But right in the middle of where they were living.

You might wonder, “What preparations would a people need to make for God to live in their midst?” Would it be like getting ready for weekend guests or someone special coming to dinner? You feel compelled to make sure your home looks as good as possible. You want to make a good impression and you want your guest to feel welcome.

God anticipated the question and told Moses what needed to be in place for his coming. First, he wanted to be close to them but there was the problem of sin that created a breach between them. So God provided Moses with instructions about the practice of sacrificing, offering a covering for the people’s indiscretions before a Holy God. Sin is serious stuff, not to be taken lightly, and the sacrifice of unblemished animals was necessary to give the people a picture of sin.

Second, he wanted to stay close to them. Moses was given the blueprints for the building of the Tabernacle. It’s a big word for “tent.” A portable place of worship. Kind of a mobile Motel 6. And he wanted to camp out right in the middle of where they were camping. God wanted to be close to his people.

But he also wanted them to be close to each other. So he declared a third thing to get ready. He gave them Ten Commandments concerning relationships. The first four commandments focus on how we are to demonstrate our love to God. The second set of six have to do with how to show love to other people. In seeing these relationships of love it was God’s desire that people would come to know Him too.

Jesus said the same in John 13:34: “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another. . . By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”

God gave the Israelites guidelines so that, when they sought to live by them, other nations would see them as different and know that they were God’s people. God gave us Jesus so that, when we live like him, others will know that we are his people.

For those who know him, God took care of our sin through the sacrifice of Jesus. He tabernacles in the hearts of those who have drawn near to him. Could it be then that the degree to which we are obedient to him in this command to love each other is the degree of his presence we will find among us? It could be our greatest opportunity ever.

There’s a wall in front of you. Behind you is a past you are running from. Beyond the wall awaits the promise of a new life. But you’re not moving because there is this “wall.” You feel trapped. No way out. This is just the sort of situation in which God does some of his finest work.

You need only ask the Israelites. Behind them was a life of back-breaking work and slavery. Ahead of them was a life in the land of Promise. Behind them was the fierce army of a fanatical Pharaoh coming towards them. Ahead of them was a wall. Their obstruction was made of water.

Your “wall” may be a fear of failure. Or maybe it’s a lack of confidence that has grinded your progress to a halt. Or it could merely be too many problems that have piled up in front of you at the same time. And you have no clue which one to tackle first.

So you stopped. And you aren’t sure if there is a way over, around, or under this imposing impediment.

At this point many people panic. Anxiety courses its way through the body, atrophies the movement muscles, and rigor mortis overtakes their resolve. Eyes which once had clear focus now only focus on the wall just inches away.

But some look elsewhere. The Israelites looked to Moses. They began belting him with blame. Have you done the same? Blame the boss. Blame a co-worker. Blame your dog. Blame God. Maybe even blame yourself? Blame all you want but the wall remains.

While the Israelites were body punching Moses, he opted to look elsewhere. His options? He could have looked at the enemy’s army. He could have looked at the ungrateful people he led. He could have looked at the wall of water spread out before him, sat down, and given up.

Instead he looked to God. And God opened an unlikely route through the wall of water. Safely on the other side, the very wall that had halted their steps closed in on and covered the sources of their fears.

The very name of the book where we find this story serves as a reminder when we face our “walls.” “Exodus” is a compound Greek word meaning “the way out.” And in case you might have missed it, the way out was not a better job, a different spouse, or a victim mentality.

No, the way out is God. Next time you find yourself up against a wall try looking to him.

People nearing mid-life often crash into some startling and unexpected observations. For instance, we all dreamed big dreams when we were younger. But as we move at a break-neck pace through our twenties, thirties, and forties, we eventually slam head on into the realization that some of our dreams will never be realized.

That observation throws some people into a mid-life crisis. Some don’t make it that far with their aspirations, having already given them up somewhere along the way. Some run into conflict that makes them weary and they settle for less. Still others make bold decisions to trade one dream in for another.

That’s what Joseph did. Talk about dreams! He had some big ones. At seventeen he dreamed his ten older brothers would bow down to him. It’s enough he dreamed that dream. What makes it worse is that he told his brothers about it.

The older brothers already had issues with the younger son. Their father favored Joseph. He had even given him a valuable, multi-colored coat. That’s the modern-day equivalent of a parent of four teenagers giving one an iPhone and the other three a stack of quarters each for a pay phone (assuming they could find one on their travels). The brothers banded together and tossed the dreamer in a ditch, eventually selling him into slavery at the first opportunity. The next thing Joseph knew he was waking up in Egypt.

From there his life was a rollercoaster thrill ride. One minute a slave. The next in charge of an Egyptian official’s house. The next in prison. The next in charge of the prison. Then he found himself in front of Pharaoh, called upon to interpret the leader’s dreams. With God’s help he was able to warn Pharaoh he would have seven years of abundant crops that he should put in storehouses in anticipation of seven years of famine. Recognizing his wisdom, Pharaoh put Joseph second in command of all of Egypt.

And because of God’s personal involvement in his life, he was able to save his family. The same family that God was building into a nation. Joseph was in position to bring his family to Egypt and give them the most fertile land to work. And it was definitely fertile. In the time they were there they were “fruitful and increased greatly” (Exodus 1:7).

Joseph could have lost his life getting caught up in the details of his life, chasing his dreams and desires. Instead, he chose a better story. God’s story.

You can do the same. If your life’s dream has stalled, look to God. If your dream now realized is not all you thought it would be, look to God. He can give you another dream. A better one, not according to the world’s standard but God’s criterion. Just like Joseph’s. Then you’ll have a story to tell.

The casting agent enters the room with her top picks for the show’s leading man and lady. The new series will follow the spellbinding story of a clan that builds a powerful, world-impacting family tree. This is the pilot, and it is crucial to make the right call on the individuals who will fall in love and launch this Kennedy-like family of influence and fame.

Producers and writers alike have waited breathlessly for this moment, the moment when who they have envisioned as the leading characters will be finally realized in an actor and actress. But when they turn to see who has been tapped for these most special of roles, the thud of their collective jaws hitting the majestic mahogany conference table muffles their mutual groans.

There before their wide eyes, instead of the expected vibrant, young couple with gleaming white teeth and tanned and toned bodies, stand a 75-year-old man and a 65-year-old woman. Not what they had pictured for their production.

And yet, this is what God has chosen. His screenplay called for a couple to launch a new nation, one that would impact the entire world. As he would say, a nation through whom “all the nations of the earth would be blessed” (Genesis 12:1-3).

Abram and Sarai stand there, adorned perhaps by dusty old robes and crowned with wispy white hair and loosely fitting skin and as befuddled as anyone else. God chose them to begin a nation. An unlikely pair, especially after factoring in the fact that Sarai was barren. How could God expect to start a nation with a woman who could not bear children?

To complicate the story line, it will be 25 more years before they actually have their child of promise. By that time Abram and Sarai will be 100 years old and 90 years old, respectively (and their names will be changed to Abraham and Sarah). Perhaps Social Security checks will help this special couple decorate the baby’s tent and they’ll be able take naps when the baby does. And the rest, as they say, is history. His story.

God picks people you and I wouldn’t necessarily select to take part in His story. In fact sometimes we are shocked who plays the starring roles in His stories. Unlike the way we do business, He taps people, not merely because of their abilities, but for their availability. God searches for people who are open to be used by him. Since He uses only those who are willing to be used for His purposes, there is no doubt that it is He who is doing the the wonder- working. Let there be no doubt, throughout history He is the one making things happen.

That’s good news, isn’t it? In the business world, you may not have a great pedigree. In academics, you may not be a Rhodes Scholar. You may not have a lot of money and you may have average looks. But you may be sitting in a pretty good position to be a top pick for God’s work.

When I (Jerald) was a teenager, I remember reading an article about the cosmos in the National Geographic. Featured were new and stunning pictures taken by the Hubble Telescope of outer space. With powerful optics - and unaffected by the refraction of earth’s atmosphere - this satellite brought the world snapshots of ‘the great out there’ never seen or even imagined before!

One image I will never forget. It was one of those fold-out pages often featured in the magazine. This was primarily dark, yet covered with dots of varying brightness. But the background wasn’t exactly black either; rather it was grainy, like when you take a picture with a digital camera in low light.

The caption explained that each of the bright dots was in fact a galaxy with billions of stars, and each of the ‘grains’ that made up the backdrop were individual stars. To take this picture, the lens of the satellite camera had stayed open for ten day. They explained that this part of space - when observed from earth with the naked eye - would take in the amount of sky that would be covered if you held a quarter (coin) at arm’s length.

But it was the last observation that absolutely blew my mind, and is no doubt the reason I remember this with such clarity. This was a patch in outer space that was remarkable in that it appeared to be utterly black, so scientists had taken this picture in hopes of possibly finding the edge of the universe. If that doesn’t send shivers up you back, maybe you should go back and read it again!

The first line of the Story reads, “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth” (Genesis 1:1).

Right off the bat we find the main character in the story is not you or me. It’s God. And the rest of The Story will unfold out of the nature and person of this character. Just ten words in and there is enough action to leave you breathless.

It doesn’t take long to find out what God’s great passion is. Birds? Nope. Animals? Not quite. Sun, moon or stars? Bright guess. No, in Genesis 3:8 we find that God is walking in the Garden with Adam and Eve in the “cool of the day.”

Sounds nice if you are in a hot, humid climate, doesn’t it? And yet the “cool of the day” is not the focus. God is, and he is near. He is right with Adam and Eve. And he is right here with us. His simple vision for his creation was to spend time with them every day, to take a walk with them. God’s supreme passion is to be with us.

Some of you have lived your life with the idea that God is some angry cosmic kill-joy who sits in the heavens and watches you, waiting for you to make a mistake so he can zap you. Or, you feel he is distant and doesn’t care or has simply forgotten you.

But from the beginning he has shown us this is not the case. He wants to be with you. He has not forgotten you. In fact, this might be the perfect time for you to go for a walk. Or look up at the stars.

If you think Genesis is just a band from the ‘80’s...
If you think it was Dr. Dolittle who took two of each animal into a big boat . . .
If you think an epistle is a woman married to an apostle . . .

. . . you may need to know more of The Story.

You may be a bit intimidated by the Bible. You’re not alone; many people are. And no wonder, its pages mention odd names like Jehoshaphat and Nebuchadnezzar. It contains accounts from places you probably never heard of, like Sinai and Samaria. And it seems to be made up of a lot of different, seemingly unrelated stories. But it really is one big, exciting story.

You can see it easily if you open your Bible to the beginning and then flip all the way to the end.

The first words found in Genesis 1:1 read: “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.” Then, if you turn all the way to the back of the book, Revelation 21:1, you find, “Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away . . .”

In the beginning God is creating the heavens and the earth. At the end he is creating a new heaven and a new earth. So the big question is this: “What on earth happened between the beginning and the end of the Bible?” If you can answer that question you will have uncovered the one seamless story of God.

Why not read God’s story with your family this year? Studies indicate if the extent of your child’s exposure to things of the faith is a only weekly visit to church or Sunday School, the likelihood is very great that when she graduates and leaves home her relationship with the Lord will turn cold.

However, if you as a parent engage your children in the experience of reading and discussing the Bible, chances go up astronomically that they will remain strong in their faith after leaving home. You don’t have to be an expert or have all the answers. You just have to be willing to experience it with them.

Get involved in The Story of God. It will forever transform your life and your family’s life. Every day God is seeking to guide you, forming sentences that flow into paragraphs that over time write the chapter of your life––a life committed to knowing him better.

This Sunday many stepped up to say they would commit to making The Story a priority this year. How about you? Will you choose today to take your life chapter and make it a part of the Big Story of what God is doing on earth?

More to The Story: Introduction one

If you simply judge books by their covers, you might pass this book by. Its title is Ozark Childhood: Stories from a Simpler Time and Place. There are a few faces on the front that are surely unfamiliar to you and an author whose name you would not recognize. On the back cover is a picture of the author who, with his white beard, might remind you of Santa Claus.

And maybe he is. You see, this book of mine is a valued gift. I was hooked as soon as I started reading the “Acknowledgements” page. (Don’t laugh. Some people read the obituaries in newspapers; I read the Acknowledgement pages in books.)

I was hooked when I saw the names of people dear to me. Raymond and Gladys Elkins—my deceased grandparents. Betty Elkins Brown—my mother. Bill Elkins—my uncle who has also passed away. Sara, my aunt. Dave and Jody, my cousins. And the author, David Elkins, my uncle.

This is not just any book; this is a book about my family tree. The stories would probably not be of any interest to you, but they are to me. That’s what happens when you hear part of your story. Something that seems lifeless comes to life. Something that looks dull becomes dynamite, firing up your heart and igniting your imagination. You are reminded that you are part of something bigger than you are, that began before you and will continue on after you.

That is why God wants you to know his story. It’s found in another book. He wants to take you into his house where he has framed photos of your ancestors––folks you may not know––lining the walls of his house.

Stories of a family patriarch named Abraham whose faith was as great as any. A matriarch named Ruth with courage that would make the most hardened warrior proud. A stubborn Jonah and his improbable fish tale. Impetuous Peter and his big mouth. Persistent Paul and his adventures in preaching.

Yet who he wants most of all for you to meet in his story is his son. He desires for you to look long into the eyes of Jesus Christ and hear his claims that what he began in the first chapter of creation he will realize at the last chapter of the New Creation, where a perfect people can live in a perfect place with their perfect Lord.

The perfect place is on the Storyboard. The question is, “Are you?” You can be there when you find your place in His Story.

Come, let us sing for joy to the LORD; let us shout aloud to the Rock of or salvation. Let us come before him with thanksgiving and extol him with music and song. Come, let us bow down in worship, let us kneel before the LORD our Maker; for he is our God and we are the people of his pasture, the flock under his care. Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts… Psalm 95:1-2; 6-8

There’s a beautiful progression there that brings us into the immediate presence of God. It starts with loud and jubilant praise and thanksgiving: “Let us sing for joy to the LORD, let us shout aloud to the rock of our salvation.” God encourages us to express freely our praises, our thanksgiving. But then as we go further it says, “Let us bow down and worship, let us kneel before the LORD our Maker.” Praise and thanksgiving lead us on to worship. Worship is not so much an utterance as it is an attitude. It’s bowing down, it’s kneeling, it’s submitting ourselves to God. And when we come into that attitude of worship, then we qualify to hear God’s voice.

And so the psalmist says, “Today, if you hear his voice.” Alas, there are so many Christians and churchgoers who hardly know what it is to hear God’s voice, and yet that’s the key to all success in the spiritual life – is hearing God’s voice. And if we’ll follow the pathway of praise and thanksgiving leading us to worship, bringing us to an attitude where we can hear God’s voice, then we have the key to measureless blessings.

- Derek Prince

This morning as we were about to eat breakfast, Emilie turned to me and asked if we could pray. In many families praying before a meal is a given, in my family it is not. It isn’t something I was familiar with while growing up, and it isn’t something that comes naturally now. There is the rare time we will pray before eating; like if someone comes to visit and I know they pray before they eat. But that is about it. Me and Luc looked at each other, we looked at Emilie and we said, sure.

She looked at us very seriously, put her hands together (and showed us how) and then said a simple prayer.

Jesus thank you for our house and for our food, amen.

I asked her where she learned to do that, but in usual Emilie fashion, she didn’t know.

So that left me wondering, if I don’t take the responsibility to teach my children about Jesus, who is?

And if I don’t know who is teaching my children about Jesus, how do I ensure that what they are being taught is what I want them to learn?

Which brings me to my next question, how do you encourage your children to learn about Jesus is your family?

-Tammy Blanchette

   Dear Family,

Here’s a quick update on what we were ‘up’ to today. Together with Juan’s family, Pearl, Issachar and Rob, we took the ‘teleforico’ (gondola) up the mountain overlooking Puerto Plata.

This was the bay Christopher Columbus sailed into when he first set foot on the island. Taking in the beautiful scene from above, I couldn’t help imagining this pristine valley without the city, and the Spanish ships dropping their anchors in the port. How tragic, the arrogance of these foreign conquistadores as they subjected and eventually decimated the native population of the island. Were they really so blind to the truth, unable to acknowledge God loves each soul equally and unequivocally? Still, more than 500 years later, God’s intention to bless and redeem this island remains intact. So here we are, one small group from a far off country, not coming to demand servitude, but rather to learn, to serve, to give, to bless, and to unconditionally love. Like the Haitian pool-cleaner I hugged this morning and looked in the eye as we talked about Jesus and being fathers. Anyhow, back from my day-dreaming and to our day...

To the beat of the tunes pumping from Issachar’s hip-speakers, and with pack lunches and guitar in hand, we make the short hike over to our ‘meeting place’, a domed shelter overlooking a breathtaking view of an inland valley. Worship and sharing flow easily here, as each one reflects on the experiences of the last two weeks. God has touched our hearts in so many ways, and we grapple with vocabulary to give voice to our emotions.

After another exploratory round on the mountain top, we return to the hotel for some R&R. A final food fiesta at the Mexican restaurant rounds off the day nicely.

--Jerald.

  Friday, Feb. 25

Praise God for this morning! Today we got to have one more hour to sleep/rest.

God led us to buy groceries for the family who will be receiving the house which some of you helped in our fundraising. Thanks to your generousity, this family will live in a better home without worry of snakes, rats or even rain coming into their house. The house you sponsored is #151.

This morning we attended a service in creole interpreted into Spanish, and then into English by our good friend Issachar. It was very emotional for me and many others, because Lynne and Aime shared their testimonies. The Spirit of the Lord had a powerful annointing on them. It is not easy to spill out your life in front of complete strangers. Praise God they both did a great job.

After a packed lunch in our usual eating place in the village, we had the dedication of the house for our sponsored family. The name of the grandma who is receiving the house is Anita. A grandson is currently living with her in her shack, and we heard today her daugher and granddaughter will be moving back in with them when the new house is complete. She was very grateful. John Huizinga – director of the Samaratin Foundation – talked to us about the importance of the housing project in helping the poor. Even when we leave here – he said – we leave our ‘fingerprints’ behind in their lives, and they will never forget us. We prayed for Anita and her family, and presented them with two suitcases full of groceries.

Afterwards we heard Juan’s testimony, which was a great blessing to us. It gave hope of what great miracles God can do in a person’s life. God healed his severed spine, after doctors said he would never walk again. Within a month and a half of the accident, he took his first steps! Juan gave God the honor and glory. What strong faith this man has in our faithful God!

We also went to visit the children which some of you have sponsored. This is for Joyce: You have sponsored a boy named Eliason. This boy clinged on to me from the first day we arrived there. I did not know it was your sponsor child until today; I found out when I went to ask Juan if Eliason had a sponsor. He speaks French fairly well, I think that’s why he was onto for the two weeks. Thank you for sponsoring him. He and his family live in house #86 in Esperanza (the village of new houses). I think I lost my shoes this past week because one Haitian worker asked if I would give him my shoes.

Keep praying for Villa Esperanza. God bless you! --Rene Leclair

PS. ‘I love you’ to all my family

Another wonderful morning of serving in the village of Esperanza with our chauffer/host Rob and our inspirational translator Issachar….

We were greeted by Tina at the clinic where we presented our donated medical supplies and she briefed us on how the clinic operates, benefiting many from the village and the local area. What stuck with me from what she said is that we can help the locals but we should not deprive them of their local ways of providing for their families. In other words always respect their culture.

Well, today I found a lot of things were coming together on our projects. Not only are we getting used to working in one area, we are establishing growing relationships with the local workers and the leaders. I believe that because our team is able to work well with very minor supervision that the projects are moving ahead at a very fast pace. (Not having rain is also a great blessing)

At the beginning of the week some of us were questioning the way they were doing the construction work. With our past experiences back home with all the machinery, technological instruments we figured we could do better. I truly feel that we saw today the way they are accomplishing their projects benefits the workers and their families, which gives them a sense of pride, dignity and self esteem. So in conclusion I admire them for their efficiencies in completing a house, allowing them to provide more houses for other less fortunate families.

This afternoon we visited the public Hospital in Puerto Plata for the second time and amazingly, we had enough gifts and supplies for all the patients. We witnessed the same types of healing and saw Jesus’ love fill their hearts as they accepted him. It was also a blessing for us that they recognized us from our visit there last week. Their genuine smiles confirmed our love towards the entire staff, patients young and old, terminal or not.

Kind Regards,
Aime Sabourin

P.S some of us got to hold an 18-hour-old baby, can’t wait to be a Grandpa!!!!

   Wednesday... by Tammy

I am happy to report we have been yet again free of rain! Dry conditions help everything at the work site flow so much easier. We split into two groups today, my group stayed at the top of the hill to hand mix (the mixer is broken), shovel, and pour cement.

Sand was shovelled into a circle, topped with powder cement, and then shaped into a pool where the water was poured in and then mixed with a pick-axe. It was a tricky business for the worker to keep building up the sides so that the water didn’t escape and flow everywhere. This was done by a Haitian resident of Los Algodones, who worked very hard all morning with us. Me (Tammy), Esther, Dan, Jackie, and Lorette shovelled wet cement into two wheelbarrows, pushed by Dale and Aime, who then poured it into the trench we dug the other day behind the school, and then smoothed out by Rene and Henry.

I enjoyed speaking with our Haitian co-worker, he spoke French and I was happy that I could sometimes understand him. I am also happy that I am picking up more Spanish every day!
The sun was very hot, the work hard, and the morning long! Lunch was pre-packed by the Hotel and we ate it in a house reserved for storage, workers and volunteers.

THEN, we packed up and headed over to Chi-chigua for the juice ministry. It is a small community ‘around the corner’ from Villa Esperenza. By foot it is apparently not far, but by bus we needed to go down and around the hill. We were joined on the bus by two men walking down the road to the village, and they shared a couple coconuts with us, chopping it while on route (with a machete out the back- we were afraid for his fingers! The road is so bumpy!) We all took a taste, I thought it was really good.

In the village Chi-chigua we gathered in the small church (the only building not made of scraps of metal), and sang songs. The front four rows were all school children, the youngest and loudest in the front row. The church was full, with ages ranging from older adult to infant. The energy and enthusiasm was awesome. Added to the fun were tambourines, ribs??, drums, and I added in some wooden clacking spoons. It was great fun!

We played games with the children, two rounds of musical chairs, and the kids had a great time getting us unseated right off the bat.

We preformed a drime (drama/mime) about the healing power of accepting Jesus in your life, and I read my testimony (translated by Isachar), followed by the juice ministry.

The Juice Ministry is a snack/meal, provided to all in attendance. Everyone was happy to receive the gifts offered, and afterwards we heard balloons popping for the rest of our stay as the children enjoyed their balloons!

Chi-chigua is a small village, similar in construction to Los Algodones in that it consists of metal shacks. There is unreliable electricity, no running water, no sewer. Rob and Tina arrange for water to be brought to the village so that the people don’t get ill. Rob has told us that there has been a great improvement in the health of the people since receiving clean water.

It is amazing to see in person the real changes that take place in these communities in response to the compassion demonstrated by those wanting to make a difference in people’s lives.
The school in Villa Esperenza (Los Algodones) is a great example of God working in people’s lives. The children and families who benefit from child sponsorship is far beyond just providing breakfast and notebooks. It will be amazing to see what they will accomplish once the school is fully sponsored.

We have been blessed to take part in new experiences and meeting wonderful people every day.

Love Tammy

    Tuesday, February-22-11

Hola Everyone,

We were up at 6:30 this morning, breakfast at 7:30AM. Then back on our famous ‘limo’- Rob’s truck – at 8:15 AM for the worksite at Villa Esperanza.

This morning some of us were on pick n shovel duty to haul dirt back into new home. Dirt is hauled into the homes for fill, followed by sand for the base and rebar, before pouring the cement floor. Others were levelling and packing this base by stomping it down with a pipe with a metal plate at the end of it. Some were on wheelbarrows hauling dirt, sand and cement over rough terrain.

Everyone is at work, young and old(er), nobody’s complaining and all are enjoying themselves even if it’s rough work, God is always with us, lightning our work as this is what He has put into our hearts, and it’s all for His glory.

Around 11:15AM some went to meet and visit with their sponsored children and their families. It is amazing how the effort of several different groups have accomplished the transformation of this little community. Last year there were aproximately 40 new homes. This year there are some 140 new homes, and Algodones is slowly being torn down. It is amazing what can be done if people realize the need of our poor brothers and sisters in Christ.

We all had the afternoon off; we were all very sorry to see Daniela leaving in the afternoon, we’re praying for a safe trip back home on her behalf, to be united with Josia and Anika. May every one of you at Open Door welcome her back with open arms. She will have a lot to share.

-- Lorette and Henry Marion

PS. Beautiful sunny day today.

Sunday, Feb 20

Our day starts at Rob’s church, the skies ope up once again as we enter a beatiful plantation-style hotel. The church is held in the back patio; the ocean surrounds us on all sides, and flower gardens are everywhere. Wow! How awesome to worship in this setting. Pastor William Oosterman preached on Luke 7:18-50, he challenges us to live as Jesus did. To close the Open Door team sings “The River”.

Team members meet for lunch after the service, and most us take advantage of the afternoon for relaxation and much needed rest. Dale and Lynne arrive in the DR. We leave for Juan’s church at 6:30PM in our trusted jeep-truck, Rob at the wheel. As we arrive at village #3, we hear loud prayer and praise. The women are annointing and preparing for the service. We present our songs and the Drama. Dan and Colette also share their testimony with translation by Daniela.
We feel so welcome here although we don’t understand the language, we feel peace and the presence of our Lord Jesus. We are amazed at the capacity of so small a building; the people keep coming in. More chares fill the front of the building. We stand in awe of God’s mighty hand. Praise and worship is loud but so amazing. As we return to our hotel it’s very quiet on the ride back. We learned an important lesson tonight. We have so much, complain loudly, and are often not happy. These people have little or nothing, depend on God’s mercy and continue to praise him daily. Amen.

--Colette

Another praise report. After the service Aime, Daniela and I went to Juan’s house to pray for his wife Jocelyn, who had been sick for 4 days. She had a fever and was feeling very ‘down’. We worshipped, prayed and annointed them and the house with oil, and instantly her fever left her and she felt better! They had a good rest last night, and she was back on her feet today. Praise the Lord for answered prayer! --Jerald.

Hi everyone,

I’m at a loss for words and the people who know me know that that doesn’t happen often. What we experienced today was heart wretching yet uplifting. It’s hard to believe that people could live in such horid conditions. We visited Los Algononos, walked through the sludge infested streets and were even invited to go in and see their homes. The level of poverty was something we had never experienced yet when asked where their hope was, they said it was in Jesus. One particular elderly woman shared how she had had nose cancer and was healed because of the care she received at the clinic. She expressed her faith in Jesus and how her faith had sustained her through it all. This woman lived in a tin shack, with dirt floors infested with termites and, exposed to all the natural elements including rats and boa constrictors. And at 77 years old, she was raising her grandson all by herself.

Dale and Henry met an elderly gentleman of approximately 97 years old, around the same age as their dads and he told them pointing to his black skin that no matter if we are black or white we have one Father in heaven.

Today was also very rewarding as we were able to work with a great team, digging trenches and painting to embellish the school grounds. We also did crafts with the children and saw the joy on their faces when their bracelets were finished and they could wear them.

Change was evident when walking through the new streets with the news homes that had been built. There was a sense of community among the people and a sense of pride in their new surroundings. What touched us greatly was the joy of the children that were in school. They were well kept and so eager to share and talk with us. We saw the value of sponsorship in that place.

After today we know that God works in people’s hearts everywhere around the world if they
let him in. He is the same God we believe in and he is changing lives everywhere.
It’s been a day that will be marked in our memories forever.

--	Lynne and Dale

When we woke up this morning we found we had a lot of rain over night, so being the flexible team that we are we had no problem changing plans and going to visit the hospital in the morning. This consisted of handing out care packages, visiting, praying, and even leading some to the Lord. More to follow when we come back.

We went for lunch as a team to Sirena food court and then left for the former Aguas Negras - now ‘New Rebirth’ - to visit Sandra and her mission. (wow, what a lady!) We spent time with the children in school and took a walk around the village. We saw some positive changes from last year. Praise God! The children sure can tug at the heart!
See you when we get home. Dios te bendiga, Dan and Esther.

The women shovelled thick-gravely-clay-goo, while the men ran the wheel-barrows into the house. George figured he lost three pounds in sweat. While we stopped for lunch, it started to rain again, so we started singing the songs we practiced as a team. It was so cute to hear the children in the neighboring house asking us to sing more songs. As it was too wet to move any more dirt, we packed up the tools and returned to the hotel. Team pranks went to a new level when Aime sprayed Rene, Colette, George and I with water from a balcony as we walked underneath.
Domincan Missions 2011: Day One

The first day of the missions trip went very well, and it was also quite the eyeopener. I knew what to expect out of visiting these villages; I knew that the living conditions were very poor and might be heart-wrenching to some. I had seen pictures of these places, but I feel that its quite different once you actually see them with your own eyes. When I got there, I had a feeling of depression upon seeing the homes, and the underfed animals running around and such, but immediately after getting out of the truck a little boy took my hand and I was his for the visit. The people in these communities are extremely full of love, I found out, and I was very pleased by this. Its inspiring to be around people who have smiles on their faces and always wave back when you and them both know the kind of lives they lead.

God has helped very much in this area of the world. While the living conditions are extremely poor, the point is that there ARE living conditions. The villages have sprung up very fluidly and quickly over the last 20 or so years, and it is with the help of God. We came here as a missions group to help the people here in the name of God, and we are happy to do so. The people here are happy to receive any sort of help and we’re happy to give it.

My advice to anyone who would come on a missions trip in future years is to keep a very open mind, and a very open heart. (Also, pack rain gear.) The people here are so very full of love, and it brings a smile to my face to see it. Everyone is friendly. There’s no other way to put it: when you see the locals smile, you smile. All the children are full of hugs and handholding. This trip is definitely a very intense emotional experience. Here’s to hoping the rest of the trip goes just as well.

- Niall Moline

Dear Family,

So we’re here; full head count, everyone made it and all our luggage came through with an acceptable level of rummaging at customs. Having boxes clearly labelled as humanitarian is clearly a flag for getting extra attention from the officials, but all-in-all we made it through alright. Praise God!

Everything ran late though, starting with our flight out of Toronto which was delayed, coming to the wrong lobby first at the hotel, trying to figure out where everyone’s rooms are, some more shuffling around to find rooms for everyone, and so forth. Finally at 8PM local time we were all back together, so we could walk over to the dining room for supper. Everyone looked quite exhausted by that time, and tomorrow’s a new - and full - day. Pray we’ll get the rest we so need tonight! Let the adventures begin!

-- Jerald

Sorry about the delay in updates. I have been writing but internet connections have been sketchy the last few days, and I couldn't open the other blog page any more, so I have to start a new one. Here's are some more updates...

Wednesday

Good evening.

A quick update today, and it wasn’t a day of pictures (tomorrow should bring some new scenes again). In the morning, the team got the tour of the clinic and Tina and Rob answered their questions. I sneeked away and spend more time with Juan in his office.

After lunch we sat down for a meeting with John Huizinga, David Marshall, Juan and me. I had known about this meeting since last night, and and been in prayer, knowing the outcome would have huge ramifications for everyone involved. And it turned into a very intense meeting; not tense, but intense, especially for me. So much needed to be said and I was translating both ways, and it was important that hearts were heard on both sides, and a common understanding would develop for the changes that needed to be implemented. Upon reflextion it struck me that this was a meeting 3 years in the making. All-in-all each one of us walked away from the meeting sensing ‘mission accomplished’.

Tomorrow I plan to go out with Juan, have lunch with his family and see some more mission schools. I’ll try and give you an update then.

So long for now, thank you for continued prayers!

--Jerald.

Thursday

Today the team went to visit Aguas Negras, and I went with Juan to spend the morning and lunch with him and his family.

We’re still sitting at the table in Juan’s house after a delicious seafood meal I shared with his family. A man comes up and wants to speak with Juan, who disappears for a while. When he comes back he fills me in on what’s been happening over the last few weeks. Recently a few families had moved in to the vicinity of Juan’s house, and Juan and his wife have shared the gospel with each of them. A while later one family came to them for help. They had been under severe spiritual attack at night for two weeks through a relative involved in whichcraft. Through his witness whole family accepted Christ as Lord, they annointed each of them and the whole house, dedicating the child to the Lord, and the neighbor (who was not yet a Christian) came to tell Juan that the attacks had stopped completely. “Everything is completely different now since you came” he told Juan. What a powerful testimony! “This kind of thing happens all the time here” Juan says.

We visited Juan’s pastor – Jose Polanco – who is the caretaker for Elio Madonia’s yard (the founder of Samaritan Foundation). Very beatiful, will post a few pix from there.
In the afternoon we visited some other local mission schools. Back at the hotel in the evening we had a great time of worship and sharing as a team.

--Jerald

   Good Evening,

Another full day is behind us!

In the morning we returned to Los Algodones. The team was given a tour of the old and new villages, while I spend some one-on-one time with Juan. After lunch we went to Juan’s church to do ‘juice ministry’, involving a program for the kids and a treat bag with a snack and juice. I lead some songs with the kids, and one person from the team shared a bible story. Afterwards I met up with Larry and Pearl, who live 2 blocks from the hotel, and we sat on their balcony and ‘caught up’ and prayed together. Then after supper I sat down with David Marshal for a ‘tet-a-tet’ in which we discussed how to move forward in our part of the IN Ministry. All-in-all a very fulfilling day.

On a personal note, in between our time with the kids and meeting with Larry and Pearl I had about 30 min. so I got my trunks on and ran to the beach. The waves were exceptionally high today and of course I had to test my hand at body surfing. The first few attempts went off without a hitch, until particularly large wave gave me more than I bargained for. I felt my whole body being lifted up and carried with the wave (good) and my upper body completely out of the water (very good) until the wave crested, throwing me into a summersalt and slamming my head and shoulder onto the beach (not so good). Needless to say my shoulder was throbbing and is still sore, and my sinuses were still draining salt water a full hour after the fact, but no measurable permanent damage can otherwise be found :) If you notice anything let me know.

--Jerald.

Dear Family,

On the way to the Dominican Republic, I joined 10 people in Toronto - from various churches in Ontario and two from New Brunswick. We arrived here at the Casa Marina hotel in Sosua at about 10:20PM (two hours ahead of CT). My roomate, Michael and I stayed up and chatted until about 1:30AM! And the 'juices' - the miracle that happens when a team is formed from a group of people - already started to flow today!

After breakfast we had a devotional and prayer time in the morning, followed by an initiation to mission work in the DR and further sharing by Rob. After lunch Rob - with ol' faithful JAC (a truck, not a jag) - took us to Los Algodones for a debriefing with Juan and the staff at the school. Isacar joined us on the way, and served as translator. It was so special to meet Juan again and we were able to chat briefly before joining the others.

Something truly supernatural happened at this meeting. After the introductions, Juan began to lay out the opportunities and challenges presented in the school’s ministry. The group’s questions showed they were really engaged in trying to understand, and Juan gained confidence and began sharing more deeply. He told about a woman with small children but no money. He was helping her get an operation this week, not knowing where the finances would come from. He also shared about the heartbreak of having to reduce his staff’s salaries and eliminate all afternoon classes for lack of funding.

Juan has a way of stating the facts while never letting go of his unwaivering confidence in the faithfulness of God. As the level of trust in the room grew, he went into his testimony; the amazing account of the power of God’s healing of his broken back. “If God can do this to a broken back, can he not also raise up a ministry in the face of impossible odds?”

The response was heartfelt and sincere. Leaders from the team committed to finding the necesary sponsorships. A decision was made to pay for the woman’s operation. Building a kitchen facility for making one wholesome meal a day for the kids became a ‘no-brainer’. Juan’s heart was understood; it never was about the money, but about bringing the light of Jesus into a dark and hopeless community. And they couldn’t do it alone; these stategic partnerships are as important to the ministry as the heart is to the body.

“I don’t think I need all the stuff I thought I needed,” one of the men said to me on the way back to the hotel. And he’s bang on. This place has a way of doing that to you. If you’re preparing to come here in February, be ready. It will happen to you.

-- Jerald.

   Hey everyone

Things are going really well here. Currently we just celebrated Thanksgiving; the Americans put it on! It was amazing and yummy pumpkin pie...

And I'm trying to learn the clicking African language. It's hard!

Anyways, since I last emailed I have had many different teachings; I had "Worldview" which was very interesting and then I had a mini outreach in Numberg which was crazy!

We had teaching during the week where we learned dramas and went to smalls groups and spoke. Then on Thursday we went to the train station and sang songs and handed out food. During one of our dramas we were performing an angry guy came and interupted us to say he was the next Hitler and that we were crazy and he said he would beat us. It scared me a lot but I said a little prayer and we continued the drama with him standing there! There were some pretty questionable people around so I was nervous but the night ended well. The police left us alone; it was amazing.

Then we spent the weekend in a cute fairy tale town surrounded by towers and a huge wall. I shared my testimony and then we came back on Sunday.

Monday we started "Holy Spirit" week where I had the first amazing experience of the Holy Spirit. My classmates were praying for me after I said a prayer and as I was listening an waiting I felt frustrated because nothing was happening so I got really calm and peaceful when all of a sudden I jolted back and started shivering and crying. It was amazing I was so excited and then I recieved the gift of tongues. It was so amazing .

Then there was "Relationship" week and I had the blessing of having chris come. It was so great to have him here and to see how God has been working in his life, and so the right time to have a familiar face. I get very home sick from my increadible amazing family; I love you all very much. We learnt alot of things about a godly relationships it was so perfect.

Then this week was "Spiritual Warfare" which as so exactly for me. I learnt so many things that I'm learning to apply now and so much about my authority in Christ. I also learned my hour has come to be set free; it's very exciteing. Chris is here still and I'm loving it, but he leaves Monday which makes me sad. He has grown so much please keep him and our relationship in your prayers.

And it's 2 weeks till I leave for South Africa. I'm nervous but excited. Many things will happen I have been asked to preach for 1 hour for the first time in my life in front of an African crowd, haha. So I'm nervous and our 2nd day we get there, we are in the bush for 7 days showering in the waterfalls. Please pray for us as this is the time of year they worship their ancestors and it's going to be very spiritual. But God will be with us; no doubt in my mind. Thank you for your prayers and support and I can't wait to see you all soon!

Please keep me in your prayers I feel quite sick sometimes and I wanna be healthy for Africa!

God bless.

For those who could join us for the conference this past weekend, we learned so much about the Holy Spirit and his impact on our lives. Of course the discovery process does not end here; for some it was a good start, for others a powerful encouragement to keep pressing in. If you're at all like me, the craving for more continues; "There must be more than this"! In reading further on this subject, I ran into an in-depth class taught by Chuck Smith called "The Person and Gifts of the Holy Spirit". Here is an excerpt from the first lesson I found very helpful; maybe you will too! ~Jerald

Jesus promised His disciples that He would pray the Father to give to them another Comforter—parakleton. The word paraklete in Greek means one who comes alongside to help. Jesus has been alongside of the disciples for several years. And He is now saying to them, "I am going away. Where I am going you cannot come now."

Surely you can imagine how they felt because they had come to so trust in the Lord. They had such confidence that He was the Master of every situation. Jesus was just a handy person to have around. They never had to worry when Jesus was there. If the Pharisees were trying to trip them up and stump them with some kind of a technical question, Jesus would handle them. And He could handle them quite handily. And so they would not have to worry—just talk to Him, you know. If there were taxes to pay and they did not have the money available—it was wonderful to have Jesus around—He would tell them just exactly how to get the money. "Go catch a fish, take the coin out of his mouth and pay the man." If they were out on a stormy sea in danger of sinking, it was always great to have Jesus around because He had the power to still the storm and to bring them safely into the desired haven.

All the way along they had come to trust in Jesus. They had come to rely upon Him. When Jesus was there, there was nothing to worry about. There was nothing to fear—He was there helping them. Now He is saying, "I am going away," and the disciples' hearts are filled with fear and turmoil. And that is why Jesus said, "Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid." Those words indicated that their hearts were troubled—they were afraid. They wondered, "What will we do without Jesus?" And Jesus is now telling them what they will do.

"I will not leave you comfortless." The word there is orphanos. I will not leave you as orphans. I will pray the Father—He will give you another parakleton, another Comforter—one who will come alongside of you to help you. And that is exactly what the purpose of the Holy Spirit is. He is the one to whom you may come into a personal relationship, who will come alongside of you and help you in and through every situation of life. And Jesus is saying, "Just as I was with you and took care of every situation, so the Holy Spirit will be with you and will take care of every situation for you."

And that is why it is so very important that each of us come to know the person of the Holy Spirit. To know Him in His fullness, in order that we might experience that comfort, that help, the strength that we all need, especially in these days in which we are living.

Through the grace of God we are praying God will give to you such a knowledge of the Holy Spirit, such a hunger for the Holy Spirit, such a thirsting after the Spirit, that you will come to know Him as He has been revealed to us in the Scriptures. As you come into a deep, personal, intimate relationship with Him, your life will be absolutely transformed by the power of the Holy Spirit working in you.

So, it is my purpose during these studies to introduce you to the Holy Spirit. And it is my prayer that you come into a long and fruitful relationship with Him—that you will come to depend upon Him for your guidance, for your help, for your strength, for your comfort, and for power. And I pray that He will come and become closer to you than any person you know. May you be bathed in His glory and may you yield to His influence as you allow Him to conform your life into the image of Jesus Christ.

Now it is always dangerous to look at the experience of others and seek to have a duplication of their experience. Although Finney described his experience as waves of liquid love just flowing over and over and over until he cried out, "I will die if these waves continue to pass over me"—and though he described his experience as electricity, waves of electricity going though and through him—that could very well not be your experience. It is not necessary that you have the same reactions to the Holy Spirit or the same feelings that Finney had. The Holy Spirit is sovereign in the gifts that He bestows upon the believers. He is sovereign in the way He relates to us. Some, as Finney, have described experiences like electrical shocks and others have described tingling sensations. Some have described just waves of glory, while still others have described just an incomprehensible peace and love filling and flooding their soul.

I cannot tell you what experience you may have or how you might relate and how it will feel to you. That is not the important issue. It is not the feelings that are important and the Lord did not give us the Holy Spirit that we might have sensational feelings, such as electricity or liquid love. Those are wonderful! I am not discounting them, but I am just saying, do not premise your experience on the feelings or reactions that you may have to the Holy Spirit. Yours may be entirely different and it may be that you will not feel anything. But that does not negate the relationship with the Holy Spirit and the power that you will experience in your life when you come into that full, complete relationship that God wants you to have—that the Holy Spirit desires to have with you.

The purpose is not that you might get more of the Holy Spirit; but the purpose is that the Holy Spirit might get more of you—that your life will become controlled by the Spirit. Your character will be controlled by the Spirit, so that you will be led by the Spirit, that you will walk in the Spirit, and that you will be filled with the Spirit.

You can go home tonight and just yield yourself to the Holy Spirit, giving yourself over to His control, to His filling—the yielding and the surrendering of your life to Him. And you can begin even this night—that glorious walk in the Spirit and experience that fullness that God desires for each of us.

When you look at the life of Finney and read of his revival meetings in which thousands of people came to Jesus Christ—eighty-five percent of them stuck with the Lord. When you read about cities where he was holding meetings and, after the meeting, every bar in town was closed due to the lack of customers, you begin to realize what the Holy Spirit can do when He comes upon a person's life. You will never know your full potential in Christ until you have yielded to the fullness of the Holy Spirit in your life.

The church is in desperate need today of a new, fresh work of the Holy Spirit. Unfortunately, we have sought to substitute programs and psychology and many other gimmicks for the power of the Holy Spirit. The church is suffering as a result and I am praying that God will give to us a fresh outpouring of the Holy Spirit in each of our hearts and lives—a renewing of the life of the Spirit within the church. Surely we need it and surely our community needs it desperately.

Long before the church had pulpits and baptisteries, she had kitchens and dinner tables. "The believers met together in the Temple every day. They ate together in their homes, happy to share their food with joyful hearts" (Acts 2:46 NCV). "Every day in the Temple and in people's homes they continued teaching the people and telling the Good News—that Jesus is the Christ" (Acts 5:42 NCV).

Even a casual reading of the New Testament unveils the house as the primary tool of the church. "To Philemon our beloved friend and fellow laborer . . . and to the church in your house" (Philem. vv. 1-2). "Greet Priscilla and Aquila . . . the church that is in their house" (Rom. 16:3, 5). "Greet the brethren who are in Laodicea, and Nymphas and the church that is in his house" (Col. 4:15).

It's no wonder that the elders were to be "given to hospitality" (1 Tim. 3:2 KJV). The primary gathering place of the church was the home. Consider the genius of God's plan. The first generation of Christians was a tinderbox of contrasting cultures and backgrounds. At least fifteen different nationalities heard Peter's sermon on the Day of Pentecost. Jews stood next to Gentiles. Men worshipped with women. Slaves and masters alike sought after Christ. Can people of such varied backgrounds and cultures get along with each other?

We wonder the same thing today. Can Hispanics live in peace with Anglos? Can Democrats find common ground with Republicans? Can a Christian family carry on a civil friendship with the Muslim couple down the street? Can divergent people get along?

The early church did—without the aid of sanctuaries, church buildings, clergy, or seminaries. They did so through the clearest of messages (the Cross) and the simplest of tools (the home).

Not everyone can serve in a foreign land, lead a relief effort, or volunteer at the downtown soup kitchen. But who can't be hospitable? Do you have a front door? A table? Chairs? Bread and meat for sandwiches? Congratulations! You just qualified to serve in the most ancient of ministries: hospitality. You can join the ranks of people such as . . .

Abraham. He fed, not just angels, but the Lord of angels (Gen. 18).
Rahab, the harlot. She received and protected the spies. Thanks to her kindness, her kindred survived, and her name is remembered (Josh. 6:22-23; Matt. 1:5).
Martha and Mary. They opened their home for Jesus. He, in turn, opened the grave of Lazarus for them (John 11:1-45; Luke 10:38-42).
Zacchaeus. He welcomed Jesus to his table. And Jesus left salvation as a thank-you gift (Luke 19:1-10).
And what about the greatest example of all—the "certain man" of Matthew 26:18? On the day before his death, Jesus told his followers, "Go into the city to a certain man and tell him, 'The Teacher says: The chosen time is near. I will have the Passover with my followers at your house'"
(NCV).

How would you have liked to be the one who opened his home for Jesus? You can be. "Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me" (Matt. 25:40 NIV). As you welcome strangers to your table, you are welcoming God himself.

Something holy happens around a dinner table that will never happen in a sanctuary. In a church auditorium you see the backs of heads. Around the table you see the expressions on faces. In the auditorium one person speaks; around the table everyone has a voice. Church services are on the clock. Around the table there is time to talk.

Hospitality opens the door to uncommon community. It's no accident that hospitality and hospital come from the same Latin word, for they both lead to the same result: healing. When you open your door to someone, you are sending this message: "You matter to me and to God." You may think you are saying, "Come over for a visit." But what your guest hears is, "I'm worth the effort."

Cheerfully share your home with those who need a meal or a place to stay. God has given each of you a gift from his great variety of spiritual gifts. Use them well to serve one another.
(1 Peter 4:9-10 NLT)

Heavenly Father, you have given me so much—every breath I take is a gift from your hand. Even so, I confess that sometimes my own hand remains tightly closed when I encounter the needs of others. Please open both my hand and my heart that I might learn to delight in taking advantage of the daily opportunities for hospitality that you present to me. Help me remember, Lord, that when I show your love in tangible ways to "the least of these," I am ministering directly to you. As you help me open my heart and hand, O Lord, I ask that you also prompt me to open my door to those who need a taste of your love and bounty. In Jesus' name I pray, amen.

From Outlive Your Life: You Were Made to Make a Difference
Copyright (Thomas Nelson, 2010) Max Lucado

Hey Jerald

I just thought I would tell you and everyone that has or hasn’t heard from my mother at the church how things are going here, everything is very beautiful like out of a fairy tale and was a lot to take in at first but I'm getting used to it now and everyone here is very sweet the leaders are amazing and they have already said that they have not seen a group so close so fast.

There are 10 people in my DTS; 5 are Germans from different areas, 1 Cuban, 2 Americans and 2 Canadians. They are the most wonderful fun loving Godly people ever. We all felt like we knew each other for years; the second day we were sitting around laughing all evening like old friends. Praise God for how he put us all together.

The first week I was here we basically got ready for the shlossefest (castle fest). The castle turned 400 years old this last Sunday. It was a big party and we all had to do our part whether it was serving desserts or cooking to cleaning. Somewhere from 500 people to 1000 people we expected and I think around that many came. We were told that this was a weekend to not be evangelists with our words but with our actions and we prayed that they would feel Gods presence in our actions.

The village of hurlach has very many old fashioned catholic members who for many years thought that the castle and all its goers were a cult, and had therefore have never come to the castle. So we were celebrating the castle and hoping they would come and also see we were only Gods servants not a cult. It went really well and we got to dress up like medieval princesses and princes and so on.

Then the second week we did "church rocks" which is a week where all the churches here and around lensberg a neighbouring city come together with the schools to bring the gospel to school children so all week we went to different churches and worshiped with children we danced like crazy people in front hoping the kids would feel our passion and joy for God and want it too...many schools came all week.

Then on Thursday evening I was able to share my testimony. I don't even remember raising my hand to volunteer; I believe God did it for me and therefore he spoke through me to the kids about my testimony on fear. then Friday evening we had the main event in the evening and hoping and praying with all our events during the week - whether it was in the schools or on street ministry where we hung out with the youth in Lensberg at a skate park/soccer field - that they would choose on their own to come Friday evening.

And praise God many many did! It was a packed evening - dancing singing and praising god with the children...I specifically remember a 11 year old girl who got her older sister to tell me in English that she was there the day I shared about my testimony and that she had thought it was so wonderful and she told me with a smile on her face “I even cried when you did”...that is so touching to me because she is so young.

I am having a wonderful time here even thought I have been sick since the very first day I got here.
I would like to ask for prayer that I just no longer feel sick and for me to not miss my family and boyfriend too much and that I get everything god has planned for me out of this.

Thank you to everyone for your prayers and support
God bless
Christy Loewen

   Hi friends and family!

How are you all doing? It has been so long since i have sent a letter your way. Each week that goes by, I seem to dread it more because more and more things are going on and I wish there would be a better way to communicate it all to you! God has been soooo faithful!! I thank you all soooooo much for your prayers. Just to share briefly what the fruit of your prayers have been in these last couple of months:

1) I have had the strength to make it thus far! =)

2) My team has grown considerably! That has been the most amazing part! God has brought people to work alongside and not just any people.. they are girls (all university students) that have vision, passion and love for the kids and the ministry! So, it's a blast to share the fun times and the challenging times together with a group that is all learning and being stretched in Dulce Refugio.

3) We have 2 huge new additions in the area of provisions for our young moms - we recieve a monthly donation of Pampers (more than 5,000 diapers!!) and we also made our first purchase of meds for the new born babies!

4) We are now finally working on some long-awaited projects that are specifically for finding funds for salaries (my girls can't be long-term or consistent if they don't have anything to eat) and also eventually for aiming at getting our own building!

5) We went out to visit a pastor couple in Hernandarias (5 hours away from Asuncion) that has opened up their home to children living with HIV, and we are working on an agreement and ways that we can support them. I took care of one of their babies for a weekend after he was hospitalized here in Asuncion for about a month, and it was really special to see his new home and the love they pour out on these kids.

6) We got our first batch of Samaritan Purse gifts!! 400 in total!! PTL

7) I have been able to get 37,38,39,40's out of 40 in all of my classes in university!! Sometimes it came with a weekly breakdown and stressing out with everything pressing in work and studies.. but, so far so good!

8) Samy and I have been dating for 3 months now.. and he's the best gift God has sent my way!! He's an amazing support, encourager and has constantly helped me keep my sanity during these last months. Needless to say, we have been really growing in this relationship.. so, you can't say you weren't warned! ;)

Anyways... That was just a very short version of what I wanted to share with you. I will do my best to send out my real newsletter next week with pictures. I just wanted to share a bit of what is going on now and let you know that there is a place you can be looking at pics when you so desire,

http://picasaweb.google.com/dulcerefugio.py/June01PrayerWeek#

That is our album of our prayer week. I sent out some posters, cards and a letter to some churches because our kids made posters to share with kids in other countries as they focused on praying for children around the world. If you go into that album, and see the button that says "Photo Albums", it will take you to where all our albums are stored and you can see more pics.

Well, with all that being said, I want to ask for your support in prayers once again. I start with my final exams on Monday but these last 3 weeks have been especially tiring and stressful because, like i said before, my whole team is in university. So, each one is taking days off to study and then travel on their vacation time.. and that leaves me with a lot of work. I knew June and July would be tricky and difficult to coordinate and make sure every position is covered.. but, it really has been hard on me. I know everything will work out in Dulce Refugio because there are so many people there that are willing to pitch in here and there.. but, as for my exams, i can only count on my brain and it's kinda hard to make it function sometimes. So, I want to ask for your prayers specifically in that area.. that God would come shining thru as my Strength, my Provider of Knowledge, my Wisdom, my Hope, and my Renewal.

Thank you again for accompanying me on this journey!! May God bless your lives richly in the abundance of His grace!

Wendy Schmidt

    June, 2010
Dear friends and family,

I hope that you are all doing very well up north... warmer weather, vacation coming soon, camping plans, and many other things to look forward to.

Here things are going very well, we all are keeping very busy and God has been working in amazing ways. I wanted to take advantage of this opportunity to share this with you all.

First of all, this year we have added several new people to our team of teachers and staff. Two of these special people are Bianca and Evelyn. They are both in their early 20's and in their first year of studies as well and have come to Dulce Refugio by faith, working and trusting that God will provide for their needs. lt has been a huge blessing to have them here to help with some very special events we had with our kids.

Last week Evelyn started spending time one on one with the kids that come to Dulce Refugio regularly. It’s been so wonderful to see the way God has been using this young woman in these few weeks she has been here. She has brought a breath of fresh vision and passion to our team to see God at work directly in the lives of our children. God has been using her to teach the kids about their true identity in Christ and how to live out their faith!

Last Tuesday, on the 24th of May, we had such a beautiful prayer time where the kids split up in groups and 2 boys accepted Christ into their hearts, a little girl with HIV prayed that another boy would be healed of his cold, some other kids were in a comer praying and crying as the Holy Spirit was touching their hearts with His love. lt was truly so powerful!!

We know that God has His perfect ways and timing, and what we began to experience in prayer and sharing last week is only the beginning of what God wants to do in and through these kids. This week we are having a Prayer week from the 1st until the 4th of June where we are praying specifically for other children here and around the world. This 5th and 6th of June is the “Weekend of worldwide Prayer for Children at risk” and so we are planning, together with 4 other ministries and several other churches to organize different activities and opportunities for the children themselves to lead and pray for other children around the world.

Today our kids made a poster with their hand prints and the words that say “Committed hands, hands that fold together in prayer” and they made pictures that l am sending to you in Canada so that you can know that children here in Paraguay are praying for you. Tomorrow (Wednesday) they will be going out the hospital to hand out balloons and hugs, and also using that as an opportunity for the children to pray for the needs they see there. On Thursday we will show a power point with prayer requests, pictures and facts about children around the world, and then pray for them.

And Friday will be another day of prayer, sharing, and also painting a wall with a representation of prayer and worship to God. Through the children’s actions and initiative, we have started a prayer room on the third floor, open all day for anyone to pray, worship and seek God.

All in all, we (as the Dulce Refugio team) are fasting and praying that God will move in new and powerful ways. We long for the children to have an encounter here with their Creator so that they can go home knowing who they are in Him and that they have a Father despite having been abandoned or hurt by their earthly fathers. We strongly believe that it will be the children that will bring about a change in the hearts and lives of so many mothers who have been hardened towards God through many years of suffering.

So, I want to take this opportunity to invite you as a church, both young and old, to join us in prayer, to pray for our children as they pray for you. I’m sending some of the pictures they made for you all and I hope that at some point we can get some back from you.

May the Lord bless you richly!!
Wendy Schmidt
And Dulce Refugio...

Hi everyone, this is Otoniel Perez writing on behalf of Juan Ovalle.

Juan has been under a lot of stress and mediating a very intense and difficult situation in the Haitian community of Los Algodones and surrounding area.

He needs our prayer support!

The situation as he quickly explained has to do with criminal activity and corruption involving a gang of thieves in the village over the last five days. The security guard of the school broke up a plot by the thieves, the police came and made arrests. The bandits were let go the next day through corruption and as they came to seek vengeance on the school security guard he shot one of the leaders of the gang, who is also a corrupt authority in the community of Haitians. The village community is on the side of the school security guard and prevented the gang from harming the security guard.

The second situation happened two days ago and has the whole Haitian community stirred up with anger, fear, and desire for vengeance. In a love triangle situation a woman from the Los Algodones village brought her mother from Haiti a few days ago. The older woman is a witchdoctor and her daughter had acquired a number of death contracts for her to perform including the lover of her man. The old woman performed her witchcraft on the lover by blowing some magic dust on her and the lady fell ill and appeared to have died. Juan was part of the funeral service, open casket service, and burial along with pastor Joel in the Los Algodones village.

As people found out the story of what happened and discovered the presence of the witchdoctor among them in the village, they were enraged and full of fear. The community dug up the casket and brought her to the old woman witch doctor as a great crowd assembled with great commotion in that place. They gave her the choice of reviving the woman, eating the woman or they would burn them alive. The authorities were called, the old woman witchdoctor and her daughter imprisoned, and the body of the woman who had been assumed dead for a day and buried for over 10 hours was taken to the hospital.

The assumed corpse of the woman is currently in a coma like state with vital signs and remains in the hospital. A death wish list of some 30 people and 10 children was found among the belongings of the witchdoctor who remains under custody. Juan has taken the four grandchildren of the witchdoctor out of the village to the Dominican authorities for protection, because the village is enraged, but also afraid. Juan is also caring for the children of the woman who is in a coma at the Hospital.

This is not the first time that Juan has had to face a Haitian witchdoctor. On a previous occasion one showed up at his front door with the intention of putting a curse on his son. The Holy Spirit had warned Juan and his family ahead of time, and they had prepared in prayer. When Juan opened his front door and saw the Haitian witchdoctor on his doorstep, he asked him what he wanted. The man responded I have come for your son. Juan responded He belongs to God Jehovah and you have no right over him. The man fell back under the power of the Holy Spirit.

Juan would appreciate our prayers for direction, wisdom, and the power of the Holy Spirit to deal with this situation. Please pray for the healing of the woman at the Hospital, the safety and care of her children. Pray that evil plans of the enemy to steal, kill and destroy would be broken over the village of Los Algodones. Pray for the witchdoctor, to be set free from her evil intentions, her daughter to be set free from hatred and vengeance, her children to be safe and protected and would grow to know Jesus the prince of peace , king of kings and savior of the world.

On behalf of Juan and the ministry team of IN Network Dominicana thank you for your prayers, and support as they overcome this difficult trials.

    Dear Friends and Family,

To begin with, I would like to thank all of you that were praying for me and Dulce Refugio, it was what carried us through the many challenges we have faced in the past couple of weeks. But, we continue to see His hand at work and learn to be still as we wait on Him, walk in faith, and fight out the battles that come our way… all at the same time! But, mainly just learning to stay calm and watch Him at work!! =)

“Don’t be afraid. Just stand still and watch the Lord rescue you today… The Lord himself will fight for you. Just stay calm.” Exodus 14:13-14

So… Ready or not, on the 23rd of February we had our big event that consisted of a Nutritional “charla” (educational talk) and handing out school kits to all the children and parents that came in representation of their children.

Previous to the event we had the tremendous challenge of trying to find donations of school supplies. I had a volunteer that began the whole process but half way through, she left me hanging due to personal issues and so I had to take on another task on top of trying to keep the everyday show running and planning out the whole event.

But, I thank God for the team that He has given me this year; Adela (counselor) and Ana (social worker) were great at helping me carry out all the pre, during and post activities along with some great, very helpful volunteers that came for the day!

We didn’t get very many donations but we were able to put a nice package together with what was left from last year and added some basic materials we bought. The aim was to at least provide the basics for them to be able to begin their studies and that was accomplished. Along with the school kit we had also prepared a great snack pack consisting of fruit, juice, crackers and cookies. This was made to go along with the nutritional talk where they learnt about healthy eating habits.

About 50 kids showed up with around 50-60 parents and it turned out to be perfect according to the snacks and school kits we had prepared. We had a nutritionist come and teach the kids and parents very basic, handy eating habits and food facts. She had a great power point and even brought healthy baked soy snacks!

After the nutritional “charla”, we had a quiz to see what the kids had learnt and also to hand out some beautiful prizes. From there the mothers and kids lined up to get their school kits and snack packs. We have each parent sign for their school kit so that we know who was there and register everything in their charts where we write down everything we give to each child.

All in all, the event turned out great but for me personally it was a new challenge to know how to do an event without my usual right-hand helper/friend, Ani. We started Dulce Refugio together but she left this year to attend discipleship training in YWAM Brazil. It has definitely been an added challenge for me to work without her this year and has also really been stretching me so much more in my leadership role in Dulce Refugio. Learning to see each person as an individual and having to discover the strengths of each one and work off of that as well as transmitting the vision and passion to them so that they can walk alongside the ministry as it continues to take form and grow.

Please pray that I may have wisdom in know how to transmit and guide us as a team to discover that vision that God has placed among us. It is not my vision alone nor does the work or the results depend on me… It all belongs to Him, I am just here as an instrument to be used where and however He wills.

2 important events:
Numero uno:
On the 28th of February to the 1st of March (a holiday), I had a Dulce Refugio girls sleep over at my house! We had 8 girls come out and it we had a blast! We baked cookies, did manicures and pedicures, made personal pizzas which took forever to bake, watched movies, hung out, had a pillow fight, and talked a ton (of course!). It was a great opportunity for the girls to get to know each other better and make new friends. Most importantly, Ana and I were able to share about Jesus during a great devotional time in the morning. I felt very strongly that I needed to speak to them directly about the area of purity in the way they act, dress and seek/develop friendships with boys (considering the fact that I see 14 year-old moms coming into my office already with HIV!!). Afterwards we had a wonderful breakfast and then took them all to the bus stop to head home!

Pray that the seeds planted in their hearts will continue to be nourished and take root as the girls face many challenges as young people.

Numero dos:
Yet another step of faith has been taken, I will be a student once again!! I will be starting in Psychology on Wednesday, the 10th of March in a university not too far away from Alto Refugio. They have a strong emphasis in the social area which is what really interests me. I know that it will be a blessing to the work and development of Dulce Refugio and who knows where God will take me from there!
Pray that I will find the strength, energy and intelligence to take on yet another activity for this year! And that I may continue to trust in His providence and guidance in every area of my life!

Once again.. I want to thank each and every one of you for so many responses to my prayer requests, for supporting me financially and for believing in what God is doing here and encouraging me with your comments, letters, and words! It means so much to me and I can really feel your prayers carrying me on… it is all by His grace!

Job 22:21-25 (New Living Translation)

21 “Submit to God, and you will have peace;
then things will go well for you.
22 Listen to his instructions,
and store them in your heart.
23 If you return to the Almighty, you will be restored—
      so clean up your life.
24 If you give up your lust for money
and throw your precious gold into the river,
25 the Almighty himself will be your treasure.
He will be your precious silver!

Bendiciones!!
Wendy (to see Wendy's support page, click here)

   Dear Friends and Family,

I hope you are all doing well! As I was trying to think of how to put this prayer letter together… this picture with the “Never give up!” phrase came to mind. Not that I am going to quit, but there have been many challenges lately. So, in this letter.. I simply want to send out some information about what this first month back at work has been like and some very important prayer requests. Then, I’ll include some pictures to let you all have a peek at the action in Dulce Refugio and in my life in general.

As 2010 took off, I felt like I entered into a totally new phase of leadership and challenges in Dulce Refugio. My best friend and co-entrepreneur of Dulce Refugio is no longer working with me and I am feeling the weight of having to carry the vision forward on my own. I do have a great team that is slowly taking shape, but nothing compares to being able to share the load with another person that is just as passionate and dedicated to the ministry as you are.

Prayer request: that God would bring that person into Dulce Refugio, someone to dream with, and share the work load as each day brings new opportunities. We are also in desperate need of a full-time teacher who can dedicate time and energy to coordinate all the activities and programs we have for the kids and is also able to sow God’s love and wisdom into their lives as they mature.

Since all of our children are still on vacation until the end of this month, there has been a need for many extra activities and a great opportunity to develop some special programs with the kids and spend more time with them. For the month of February, we planned the first 2 Tuesdays with workshops like cooking, electricity, hair styling, and carpentry in the mornings and then in the afternoons they had a choreography/ dance class and time for a Bible Study. The Fire Fighters were supposed to come and teach us about safety and first aid along with an outing to the park in the afternoon where the kids will be able to see the trucks and ambulances first hand.... They never showed up.

Prayer Request: That we can continue to reach the kids with God’s love through each activity we plan. On the 23 of February we plan to have our very long-awaited event (by all of our wonderful mothers) where we will have a nutritionist give an educational talk about healthy eating and practical tips to accomplish that on a low budget. After that, we will give out school kits to each family. I am expecting to see between 100 - 200 children there with their parents so the whole ordeal is no easy task. I don’t know how we pulled it off with my friend last year, but we were able to hand out amazing school kits to hundreds of children… and I expect nothing less for this year! Again, we are totally stepping out in faith and believing that He will surprise us because as of yet, we have absolutely nothing to give them! So…

Prayer Request: That God would touch the hearts of the people that can give towards the school kits. Also that I will have a team to work in order to plan out every detail of the event because it gets complicated when you have to register more than 100 kids, carry out a program and get the kits to them without any delays, confusion or complaining.

This little princess (Alejandra) stayed with me for a couple of days while her mother took care of the baby sister in the hospital. I seriously fell in love with her!! But, it wasn’t very easy..

After spending one night at my place, she literally kicked and screamed when she was supposed to go home with her uncle. I found out that they abuse her, so I took her home with me for the weekend. She didn’t want to be with anyone else. She melts my heart!

I just really wanted to thank you all for your prayers! Especially during this last week! We have felt the pressure pushing in on all sides but we continue to be sustained by His love and mercy.

Wendy Schmidt (Click to see Wendy's Support page)

Friends:

It is about 6:00 am on Wed Jan 20th morning here in Port Au Prince, Haiti.

We have just had a large aftershock (the USGS has reported it to be a magnitude 6.1). People in the area where we are staying are all outside of their homes again, if they are still standing. People are talking loudly, some crying. My heart is racing, my emotions high.

After spending the past 5 days seeing, feeling and smelling the destruction and massive loss of life from the earthquake just over one week ago, I am deeply moved.

I realized that I would never have made it out of the house had this structure collapsed. I would have been one of the multitude that would have been crushed under tons of debris, either severely injured or even killed. It is a sobering thought.

Today as they continue to remove bodies from the collapsed buildings and take them to mass graves, or just burn their bodies in the streets I pause and remember that these corpses were once someone’s son or daughter, mother or father, husband or wife. They do not even know the names of the dead any longer, they are just bodies. When they tear down the collapsed buildings the corpses are torn apart and they only count the heads to determine how many died in the building. This seems so inhumane to me, men and women, made in the image and likeness of God, some in Christ, some not, now only body parts that need to be removed. It is hard for me to deal with.

There will likely be more partly collapsed or weakened buildings that will have come down. It is not safe to be in those buildings, and this will bring more people to sleep outside.

These dear people have been on an emotional rollercoaster. Without Christ, where would be their hope.

Please continue to pray!

Bill

William (Bill) Blaney
Director and CEO
GAiN Canada, a ministry of Power to Change

If you are able to donate, please go to <A HREF="http://www.powertochange.org."
   Hi friends and family,

Welcome to 2010!!! May the Lord richly bless you and your family as this year unfolds with it's many turns, twists, smiles and surprises!

I am sending you the long overdue letter about our huge Christmas celebration we held for 1,500 kids last year on the 18th and 19th of December. Red Viva "Viva Network", an organization led by Anja, my best friend house mate, has the vision of networking between ministries, businesses, churches and individuals in order to better assist children at risk by covering all the bases together!

As Dulce Refugio "Sweet Refuge", we have been working in several different areas together this year and joined them to finish off the year with an amazing Christmas party! So, if you want to read about all the juicy details and how we saw God at work during those special days.. this describes it all. I've included pictures just so you can get a little glimpse of the first big day!

I will be doing some personal e-mails yet to respond to those that have written me.. i absolutely love and really appreciate hearing from you all individually!
Blessings and muchos cariños! Wendy

Twas a very Merry Christmas celebration the afternoon of December the 18th, 2009. As children gathered in the park, the anticipation mounted and excitement grew. The stage was set, as were 10 stations ready with games, music, puppets and of course stocked with plenty of candy for the children as they ventured from one activity to the next. Viva Navidad was underway, hosting 900 children in the celebration of our Saviour's birthday. The kids loved participating in the different activities being offered simultaneously throughout the park. That was followed by a session of Christmas songs, clowns, presentations and dramas by kids from the local ministries, and a short message of the true meaning of Christmas from the pastor of the neighboring church. It was precious to see so many children laughing, dancing, and playing; enjoying time with friends and family and encountering God's love.

It was what we as a team had been envisioning and working towards for a whole month. Who is that team? Red Viva, a ministry who's vision is to reach the lives of children at risk through networking with churches, ministries, organizations and individuals, came up with the plan to celebrate Christmas together. So, Dulce Refugio joined together with 3 other ministries and we began to brainstorm and work on putting together what we nominated Viva Navidad. There were 7 churches that also joined in with their full support and a couple other ministries that joined in the action.

But nothing that we could have planned, talked about or put together would have been enough to pull off what we experienced that Friday afternoon. The fingerprints of God were all over the entire event and it was beautiful to see how the leaders of various ministries and churches pulled together to bless each other.

Dulce Refugio children came from all over the city to participate in the community celebration, the weather was gorgeous, we managed to find 1,500 gifts and get them all wrapped in a matter of days - the list of miracles goes on. The volunteers did an amazing job of guiding the children throughout the different activities. It gave us goose bumps to see how they gathered the children at the end of the program, had them hold hands a make a long chu-chu train and come singing and dancing up to the tables where they got their food and presents! I don't think I have ever seen that kind of distribution done so peacefully with 900 kids and their parents all anxious to get their gifts!

With one victory behind us, we packed up our things, cleaned the park and fell into bed only to get up early the next morning to do the whole celebration again! That's right, Saturday morning, in the simple and cramped property of the Christian ministry Emanuel in the slum-area of Botanico, we had the same party for about 450 kids and their mothers!! Don't ask me how we managed to fit while having fun with 5 rotating activity-stations, singing and gathering to hear a message brought through a puppet show and a visiting children's pastor, all in that cramped place. All that was accomplished with the help of 50 excellent volunteers, plus many staff, interacting and watching over the very happy kids. It was amazing to see!!

This group of kids is specifically a part of the Emanuel ministry and come every Saturday to participate in Bible based activities and eat a healthy meal. It is the only place where they learn that they can live to higher standards despite the reality of their surroundings. You should see how they sing, dance, and respect each other. We finished with serving a meal of baked chicken and rice salad on tables set up under the trees, after which they filed out, receiving their gift, hug and Christmas bread at the gate on their way out.

So yes, it was a very merry Christmas for us as we came to see the faces of so many children light up with joy through the opportunity we had to bless them. We pray that the lives of the children that were touched through God's love would continue to be impacted and filled with hope in these years to come.

As for us...
"Not as if we were able by ourselves to do anything for which we might take the credit; but our power comes from God" (2 Cor. 3:5, Bible in basic English)

In God we trust!

Dear Friends & Open Door Family,

Greetings from the warm Filadelfia, in the Paraguayan Chaco (aka hot-and-dry), where we are currently staying with Daniela's parents! They have no internet access, so it's been quite a weaning experience for us, and made it more difficult to stay connected to you in the northern hemisphere. We still do check our mail occasionally, so you are welcome to drop us a line! jerald@opendoorchurch.ca So here's to let you know we miss you, and hope you all can experience the warmth of family and God's love through Jesus as we do during these Christmas days!

One big highlight for me was co-leading worship in German and Spanish in our church here. We had a reunion of sorts, with my cousins from Hillsong Australia and the US - both also on the worship team here back in the day. Together with the current band we were quite the team! With the intense heat we were sweating like crazy; in more ways than one it was hot worship. But all that matters is God was there, and as we drank deeply we were refreshed in his presence!

In the midst of all the family time and re-connecting with old friends, I made a blitz trip on Monday the 21rst to Asuncion my with parents, who had come to visit for the weekend. This was the only way I could spend some time 'in the middle of all the action' with Wendy in Dulce Refugio "Sweet Refuge", a ministry reaching out to kids infected and affected by HIV/AIDS.

What a great opportunity to see the whole High Refuge center in full operation! I was amazed at the quality of the construction of the new building, as well as how clean everything was. The staff and volunteers obviously took great pride in 'their' center. It was also evident the space was tight already in places, especially in regards to storing and distributing incoming donations.

I was able to sit down and have a great chat with Wendy about her challenges and opportunities. Some of this I recorded on camera, and will be compiling it soon.

As we were chatting, we were frequently interrupted by mothers requesting milk or other articles for the kids. One woman came in and said she loved what was happening here, and wanted to know how she could 'collaborate'. One little boy came in who was very sad. Wendy told me later he had been abandoned by his mother when her new lover didn't want him in the house. He had always adored his mother, and the sense of rejections was heartbreaking. Wendy just held him close for a long time. Later his grandmother - now primary care giver - said he had recently had a birthday and had waited expectantly all day for the call from his mother... which never came. So Wendy called upstairs and had a volunteer prepare a gift package. He unpacked it right there in
Wendy's office, and his face just lit up! Very powerful to observe.

Tuesday night I jumped on the bus back to the Chaco after spending the evening with Wendy, Mom & Dad, for what turned out to be a 9 hour ride. Now we're here with family for the Christmas days, and then we'll be going to the east side where my bro Anton and Faith live.

I'm thinking of you especially tonight as you have your candlelight service. We'd love to be there too, but are enjoying every moment here as well. Congrats to James & Candice and Jack & Esther on the new arrivals. Looking forward to seeing you all soon!

Jerald for the Schmidts

I was nominated by Jerald & Gavin to speak on the topic of Emotional Freedom because they have so much to learn. They felt I would be the perfect one to teach them, seeing as I’m obviously “emotionally free”.

EMOTIONS

The topic on emotions is vast and the part I’m targeting today really has nothing to do with whether you cry or not. The main part of the message today deals with how do your emotions from past events affect you today...and where have they become strongholds; where we need freedom. Like I
said, there’s much more that could be said on the topic.

Firstly...

• Emotions are part of God’s creative design in each one of us.
• We are all wired with different dominant emotions which tie into our character.
• Emotions are a gift from God, which we all deal with on a daily basis.
• Dictionary.com says: An emotion is a mental and physiological state associated
with a wide variety of feelings, thoughts, and behavior. Emotions are
subjective experiences, often associated with mood, temperament, personality,
and disposition.

6 PRIMARY EMOTIONS

I did some research on Wikipedia and this is what I found. We have 6 primary
emotions: Love, joy, surprise, anger, sadness & fear.

LOVE: The first one is love. The secondary emotions for love are affection, lust
and longing. Other emotions linked to love are adoration, affection, love, fondness,
attraction, caring, tenderness, compassion and sentiment.

JOY: The second one is joy. The secondary emotions for joy are cheerfulness,
zest, contentment, pride, optimism and relief. Other emotions under joy are
delight, enjoyment, happiness, enthusiasm, excitement, pleasure, and hope.

SURPRISE: The third one is surprise. I was surprised to see this as a primary
emotion. Secondary emotions for surprise are amazement and astonishment.

ANGER: The fourth primary emotion is anger. Secondary emotions are irritation,
exasperation, rage, disgust, envy and torment. Other emotions linked to
anger are annoyance, grouchiness, frustration, hostility, bitterness, hate, spite,
dislike, resentment, contempt, & jealousy.

SADNESS: The fifth one is sadness. Secondary emotions are suffering, disappointment,
shame, neglect and sympathy. Other emotions under sadness are
hurt, depression, despair, hopelessness, gloom, grief, sorrow, guilt, regret, remorse,
isolation, loneliness, rejection, defeat, insecurity, humiliation, pity.

FEAR: The last one is fear. The secondary emotions are terror and nervousness.
Other emotions to describe fear are shock, fright, panic, hysteria, anxiety,
tenseness, worry, distress and dread.

All of us deal with emotions every day. Men & women are generally wired differently
in this area...and sometimes this causes conflict. We all grow and mature
in this area and hopefully learn how to responsibly handle emotions.

HEALING EMOTIONAL WOUNDS FROM THE PAST

The question is: Are your emotions ruling your life? Do you react according
to what you’re feeling or do you wait and respond?

John 10:10...The enemy comes to steal, kill and destroy but Jesus came
that we would have abundant life.”

This verse rings true in many situations but especially so in the area of
our emotions. The enemy does not want to see us free. He would like
nothing better than for you to be completely ruled by your emotions,
including emotions from the past that have now become strongholds...
so that every time there is an event or word that triggers negative
emotions from the past, you feel trapped and the cloud of darkness
wants to envelope you.

Galatians 5:1 says, “It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand
firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of
slavery.”

The enemy wants to place a yoke of slavery on us, because he knows
that we then become ineffective. We need to aggressively and intentionally
deal with unresolved conflicts and strongholds from our past. Only then will
we be able to walk in the fullness that God created us for.

When I was in Grade 4 I was bullied on the bus. I had to sit too far to
the back this one time and a boy in Grade 9 started making fun of me
and called me dumb and stupid...at least that’s what I heard. For
many years I had intense anxiety...and dreaded when I’d have to see
him. It was only in recent years, when I knew that it was the enemy
making this a bigger deal than it should be, that I could even face this
person. The enemy loves to use the tool of intimidation, which is
really fear.

Another way this affected me is that somehow I internalized
that I was dumb and stupid. So, putting that into my life with
Gav. Whenever he would confront me on something or even remind
me about something, I would think that he thought I was dumb and
stupid. This has been very frustrating for Gavin over the years because
he has never intentionally given me that message. Even quite recently,
I allowed the enemy to come with a very dark cloud of inadequacy,
insecurity and rejection. That was probably not the only event
that reinforced those lies, but this is one of the accusations of the enemy
that I have had to fight.

So, you can see how an event from the past can trigger emotions today.
This is only one small example and each of you sitting here today
have in some way or another had to deal with emotions that want to
bring you down. How do we deal with that? There is only one
way...and that is to invite Jesus, by His Spirit, to come and set us free!
This is what Jesus came for. We celebrate His coming to earth at this
time of year! It was for one reason alone...so that we would receive
His awesome gift of salvation and walk in the freedom that He wants.
Friends, He paid the price on the cross...shedding His blood and dying
for us, so that we could be completely free from strongholds...which
include our emotions!

My defense to the situation I just talked about is to renew my mind to
the truth from the Word of God. “For you created my inmost being;
you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am
fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know
that full well.” Psalm 139:13-14

A few weeks ago, I was getting dressed for an event...and the enemy
bombarded me with thoughts (some of you ladies might be able to relate)…”
you really don’t look very nice, all your clothes are too small,
you don’t have anything to wear”. This time I recognized immediately
where those thoughts were coming from and I intentionally quoted
the scripture from Psalm 139. Then I told the devil that it’s really
what’s on the inside that counts...and that’s what people will remember
more than anything I would ever wear. The attack lifted and I
went on to have a great evening! The sooner we learn to recognize
where our emotions are connected to wrong thoughts, the sooner we
can replace those wrong thoughts with the truth.

In recent weeks, as Gavin & Jerald have been teaching, there is a battle
going on...and that is in our minds! Ultimately the battle has been
won by Jesus, but our part is to renew our minds to believe what has
been accomplished. Our emotions are rooted in our thinking. We
don’t have to be controlled by them. We don’t have to be a product
of our past. This renewing of our minds is done by intentionally using
3 tools that Jesus has given us.

1) THE WORD… “The Word of God is living and active. Sharper than
any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and
spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the
heart. Hebrews 4:12

Fear wanted to overtake me in 1990 when a good friend was killed in a
car accident. Before I knew he had been killed, I knew there had been
an accident...and I went for a walk and quoted Philippians 4:6,

“Don’t be anxious about anything, but in everything,
with prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to
God. And the peace which transcends all understanding, will guard
your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.”

I was still very sad when Ifound out what had happened (which is
totally normal, but I believe God prepared me. He carried me through
and I didn’t allow fear to conquer.

2) PRAYER...In 2006, many of you will remember that we took a trip
back to South Africa for 7 weeks. 3 weeks into our trip when we were
at Gavin’s Mom’s place, we were robbed in the middle of the night.
Gina woke up and thought she heard footsteps but went back to sleep
thinking it was me. In the morning, we found that many of our things
had been stolen...including some things that were right beside the
kids beds. They had come right beside their beds while they were
sleeping. Kirsten suffered from nightmares for years...always thinking
she heard footsteps when she woke up. We would always pray together
and the peace would come. She is learning her authority. The
name of JESUS is so powerful.

I recently experienced a crazy nightmare that had me paralyzed when
I woke up. I just spoke the name of JESUS over and over again...for
I don’t know how long. The heaviness lifted! We underestimate the
power of prayer.

“The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective.” James 5:16

3) WORSHIP...in 1 Samuel 16 every time an evil spirit comes to torment
Saul, he calls for David to come play his harp and it says, “relief would
come to Saul, he would feel better, and the evil spirit would leave
him.” There have been many times, too many to count, where God, by
His powerful Holy Spirit, came and brought peace and comfort to the
deepest places of my heart when I have taken the time to listen to
worship music or taken the time to sit at the keyboard and just worship.
I strongly recommend having some good worship music in your
vehicles...you will find it a powerful weapon to combat emotions that
want to get you down.

We are “new creations in Christ...the old has gone, the new has come.” 2 Cor. 5:17

Conclusion

“I CAME TO SET YOU FREE...THIS CHRISTMAS SEASON REMEMBER... EMMANUEL...GOD WITH US...WHAT A MIRACLE! I AM YOUR MIRACLE YESTERDAY, TODAY AND FOREVER! THE WHOLE REASON I CAME TO EARTH AS A BABY WAS TO EVENTUALLY DIE ON THE CROSS SO THAT YOU COULD WALK IN FREEDOM...IF YOU ACCEPT THE GIFT THAT I AM GIVING YOU.

YOU CAN WALK IN EMOTIONAL FREEDOM IF YOU LEARN TO INVITE ME IN TO YOUR EVERY MOMENT...INTO YOUR EVERY DAY! I WANT TO WALK IN RELATIONSHIP WITH YOU! THIS ISN’T A RELIGIOUS THING WHERE I WANT YOU TO PERFORM...I WANT TO WALK IN A REAL RELATIONSHIP WITH YOU...EMOTIONS ARE A GIFT I GAVE YOU...TO ALLOW YOURSELF TO FEEL...EVERY EMOTION...BUT WHEN YOU WALK IN A SELFISH MANNER AND NOT SURRENDERED THEN EMOTIONS CAN BE DESTRUCTIVE.

EMOTIONS CAN BE TURNED INTO NASTY WORDS...AND THEN BECOME SUPER HURTFUL TO THOSE AROUND YOU. THE TONGUE IS POWERFUL...AND IN PROVERBS IT SAYS THAT LIFE AND HEALING ARE IN THE TONGUE. THE OPPOSITE IS ALSO TRUE...DEATH AND DESTRUCTION ARE ALSO IN THE TONGUE.

THE CHOICE YOU HAVE BEFORE YOU IS HUGE. DO YOU SURRENDER TO MY LORDSHIP ...WHERE EMOTIONS ARE IN SUBMISSION TO MY AUTHORITY... OR DO YOU GO YOUR OWN WAY...AND ALLOW YOUR EMOTIONS TO RULE YOU... AND THEN YOU CONTINUE TO WALK IN FEAR, ANGER, UNFORGIVENESS, ETC.?????

THE ENEMY KNOWS HOW TO GET PEOPLE DOWN. HE KNOWS THE POWER OF EMOTION. HE WILL SEND HIS WORKERS TO POUNCE ON ANYONE WHO IS ALREADY DOWN...AND THEY WILL MAKE IT MUCH WORSE.

HE CAME TO STEAL, KILL AND DESTROY...I CAME TO BRING YOU LIFE IN ABUNDANCE.

I HAVE GIVEN YOU TOOLS...THE WORD, PRAYER AND WORSHIP! THE ENEMY CAN’T STAND IT WHEN YOU ENGAGE IN THESE ACTIVITIES AND WHEN YOU REALIZE HOW YOU CAN GET THE UPPER HAND. YOU DON’T HAVE TO LIVE DEFEATED. I HAVE GIVEN YOU EVERYTHING YOU NEED. BUT IT IS YOUR PART TO MAKE THE CHOICE TO ENGAGE WITH ME OR LEAVE ME ON THE SIDELINES. WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO CHOOSE TODAY???

Although my father and my mother have forsaken me,
yet the Lord will take me up [adopt me as His child].
Psalm 27:10

How many of us have read over this verse and never thought twice about what it would really take
to believe these words to it’s fullest. Today God brought several people to me that needed to hear
and know about that HOPE.

9:00 am — Cesar walked into my office early this morning to say hi. He is 9 years old and I first met him when he was in the hospital (he is HIV+). He’s an incredibly bright, smiley boy and was always very close to his mom. But, this morning, almost immediately after greeting me he broke down in tears. His mother had abandoned him about 2 weeks ago. She recently gave birth to his little sister and now her new “lover” has convinced the mother to leave Cesar behind and move in with him. Cesar couldn’t stop crying and I was speechless for the longest time, just holding him. The emotional turmoil he is in affects his health in a detrimental way causing his defenses to drop, have fever, and lose weight. We spent time praying, talking and crying together.

10:00 am — Paola is one of our “everyday” kids and today there were discipline issues to talk
through with her. But, underneath every act of rebellion, there is a heart that is hurting. It’s been a
real challenge to get her to comply with the chores given and participate in the activities. But, in
these situations we are there to teach the kids that there are consequences for every decision they make and attitude has everything to do with it. It’s so wonderful to see how they flourish under the unconditional love we offer them in Dulce Refugio.

11:00 am — Ever complained about having to work? Or wished that you could be at home, lounging in your favorite chair instead of busting your brains or back to pay the bills? Well, my 13 year old boy, Jose was feeling quite the opposite. He was depressed and so upset because he lost his job as a ball fetcher at a tennis club. He doesn't have a father in the home so he has taken up that role of being the protector and provider for his family.. at 13!! He is so worried that they will not have enough money in order to take care of his mother and 2 younger sisters. But, my desire and plan is to put him either in English or computer classes so that he can continue to prepare himself for his next job.

12:00 am — Remember Franco from my first prayer letter? Well, today he walked into my office
and sat down next to me. I took one look at his face and immediately knew what he needed. I
hugged him for a long time while he just wept. He so afraid of losing his mom yet at the same
time is so frustrated that he can’t just be a normal 13 year old kid! He is going through a huge
identity crisis now as well; his family has bombarded him with lies that he isn’t worth anything,
he’s a failure and can’t do anything right. He has a group of friends that are a terrible influence
on him, but he sees no other option and told me that he would just have to “get used to them”
because he wants to have friends. Needless to say, we spent quite a while talking together
about his frustrations and what God wants to offer him.

And that was my morning…

With every child that I am able to talk with, comfort and pray for..
In every challenge I face daily in leadership, service, friendships and family
There is one thing I know I must hold on to because my life and success depends on it….

HOPE

“The Lord Delights in those who Fear Him, who put their HOPE in His Unfailing Love”
May His grace carry us through each day… thank you once again for your prayers!

Wendy
